Onion tomato uttapam recipe with step by step photos – It is a very famous uttapam variety. It is a thick pancake made with dosa batter. Uttapam is a very easy recipe and can be made with different toppings. This one has onions and tomatoes and previously I have shared the recipe of onion uttapam that has caramelized onions in it.

If there is any idli dosa batter left the next day I make uttapam for a quick breakfast. I use the same batter for making uttapam, idli, dosa, and paniyaram. The onion tomato uttapam has the sweetness from the onions and tang from the tomatoes. Addition of green chilies and coriander leaves make the uttapam tastier.

onion tomato uttapam recipe - It is an easy south indian breakfast that is like a pancake. It is made from dosa batter and topped with onions, tomatoes, green chilies, and fresh coriander.

Ingredients
  • Thick dosa batter - 1 & ½ cups (recipe here)
  • Salt - to taste
  • Onions - 1 medium, finely sliced
  • Tomatoes - 1 medium, finely chopped
  • Green chilies - 2, finely chopped
  • Coriander leaves - 2 tbsp, finely chopped
  • Oil - to roast the uttapam
Instructions
  1. To make onion tomato uttapam, start off by heating the dosa tawa. You may use non-stick tawa or cast iron one, whichever you prefer. Brush some oil on the tawa and wipe it off with a tissue paper.
  2. Pour 3 ladles or ¾ cup of dosa batter in the center of the tawa. The batter should spread out to form a thick pancake on its own; that's how the consistency of the batter should be.
  3. Quickly top the uttapam with chopped tomato and onion, as well as green chilies and coriander leaves. The toppings should sink into the uttapam partially. You may adjust amount of toppings to your liking.
  4. Drizzle some oil across the uttapam and along its edges as well.
  5. Cover the onion tomato uttapam with a lid and let it cook on low heat for 2-3 minutes. The underside should become golden and the top should be almost set.
  6. Carefully flip the onion tomato uttapam. Let it cook on low heat until it's well done. The texture of the properly cooked uttapam is fluffy on the inside like an idli. The outside is crispy.
  7. Onion tomato uttapam recipe is ready. Make the remaining uttapams the same way.
  8. Serve the onion tomato uttapam with coconut chutney. Enjoy!
