Ingredients
For preparing the dal
  • Split black urad dal – ½ cup
  • Chana dal – 2 tbsp
  • Water – 1 cup
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
For making the onion paste
  • Onions – 1 cup, sliced
  • Garlic – 12 small cloves
  • Dried coconut – 2 tbsp, grated
  • Groundnut oil – ½ tbsp
Other Ingredients
  • Groundnut oil – ¼ cup
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp
  • Khandeshi garam masala – 2.5 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 2 & ½ cups
  • Coriander leaves – a handful, finely chopped
Instructions
  1. To make black urad dal recipe, start off by rinsing and soaking the black urad dal and chana dal together in 1 cup of water.
  2. Transfer the dals along with water in a pressure cooker. Add turmeric to it.
  3. Pressure cook for 2 whistles and then let it simmer for 5 minutes. Adjust the amount of water and cooking time as per your pressure cooker’s requirement.
  4. Let the pressure release on its own. The dal should be tender but not mushed up. The grains should be soft but intact.
  5. Next, heat ½ tbsp oil in a kadhai or a skillet and toss in the onions. Saute the onions on high heat until they turn dark brown. Stir often.
  6. Let the onions cool. Transfer them to a grinder jar. Add in the dried coconut and garlic.
  7. Grind to a very smooth paste using a little water.
  8. In the same skillet, heat groundnut oil until it just warm. Add in the turmeric powder and khandeshi garam masala. Stir and sauté for a few seconds.
  9. Add the onion paste and sauté it on medium heat until oil begins to separate.
  10. Add salt and boiled dal.
  11. Finally, add water. Adjust the consistency as per your liking. Bring it to a boil and then simmer for 6-7 minutes.
  12. When the oil floats on top, add coriander leaves. Turn the heat off. Maharashtrian style black urad dal recipe is ready.
